    This half-day pre-conference course is aimed at those who would like to learn about statistics for language testing.

    The course provides an overview of the different stages at which statistics are useful throughout the cycle of designing, validating, managing, and reviewing a language exam, and suggestions for practical follow-up action. It also aims to help better understand the role of statistics and how to interpret them when working with analysts, or individually.

    The course will be led by Jane Lloyd (Cambridge University Press and Assessment), an experienced tutor and expert in the field.

    It takes place in the morning and is followed by a Basic Rasch Analysis course. Although not obligatory, ALTE advises to come to both, as this will be more beneficial.

    There is a discount for those who book the morning course and the afternoon course. There is an additional discount for those who book all the pre-conference courses (i.e. am and pm course on Tuesday, 9 April and the whole day course on Wednesday, 10 April: Digital language testing with Artificial Intelligence). Please contact the ALTE Services Unit: servicesunit@alte.org to request the discount for multiple course bookings.

    This one-day course provides an overview of the current technology, allowing participants to discover (hands-on) some freely available AI tools and products and explaining their possibilities.

    The course will cover the following aspects:

    ·       AI in the authoring process: for generating questions and source materials;

    ·       AI in the evaluation process: for assisting humans in evaluating and scoring questions, both written and oral;

    It will also look at artificial intelligence in language testing from the point of view of the candidate: to what extent can or may a candidate use AI when taking or completing a test. In addition, the course will address some burning questions such as "how can AI be used to detect or prevent fraud?".

    The course tutorBert Wylin, has both an academic and a business profile.

    Recently there has been a growing interest in using the CEFR and the CEFR Volume 2020 in language education. However, many of those involved in language learning, teaching and assessment are unsure how to understand and implement the framework.
    This online course is therefore designed to address such uncertainties. It will cover aspects such as the innovative aspects of the CEFR’s approach to language learning, teaching, and assessment, and will illustrate the use of the CEFR and the Companion Volume 2020 with examples of their (successful) implementation.

    Thursday, 9 May: 09.00 - 12.30 CET
